This test is the essential partner to the Serum Iron test. While Serum Iron measures how much iron you have, the TIBC measures your blood's capacity to carry iron. It measures the protein (transferrin) that's available to transport iron. In iron-deficiency anemia, your Serum Iron is low, but your body responds by making more transport proteins, so your TIBC will be high.
