This is the gold-standard, definitive procedure for diagnosing Hansen's disease (Leprosy). If a patient has skin patches with a loss of sensation, this test provides the conclusive answer. A small, specialized smear is taken from the skin (often the earlobe or an active patch) and is stained in our lab. Our pathologists then look under a microscope for the specific, acid-fast bacilli (M. leprae) that cause the disease. This is an essential, high-precision test.
